Step-by-Step Instructions

Step Instruction
1 Set Up the Materials:
Lay out the owl-shaped board, wool, and needle on a flat surface.
2 Introduce the Owl:
Encourage the child to observe the owl board. Explain that the board has numbers printed on it, and the center is hollow for weaving. You may say: “An owl is a bird that comes out at night. It has big eyes for seeing in the dark and makes a ‘hoot’ sound.”
3 Explain the Weaving Task:
Tell the child they will be weaving from number 1 to 2, then 3, and so on—up to 20—to cover the owl’s hollow center with a wool pattern.
4 Prepare for Weaving:
Help the child insert the wool into the child-friendly needle.
5 Begin Weaving:
Guide the child to start weaving by moving the needle from one number to the next. Offer assistance if needed, but allow the child to explore independently.
6 Observe the Pattern:
Encourage the child to notice the wool pattern forming as they move through the numbers.
7 Praise the Effort:
Celebrate the child’s work by praising their focus and creativity.
8 Challenge the Child:
Extend learning by asking:
• “What number comes after 10?”
• “What sound does an owl make?”
• “Can you try making a ‘hoot’ sound like an owl?”
