  • Number cutouts with velcro (2 sets: 1–9, 1 set: 0 and 10)
  • 2 green-coloured designed sheets
  • Glue

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step Instruction
1 Prepare the Materials: Set up the activity materials on a flat surface for easy access.
2 Prepare the Carrot Sheet: Guide the child to paste the sheet with the carrot picture at the back of the hollow activity sheet using glue (only at the 3 indicated spots), ensuring the carrots are visible from behind.
3 Slide the Green Sheet and Attach the Bunny Face: Ask the child to slide one green designed sheet from the right. Then tell the child to pick the bunny face cutout and attach it to the sliding sheet on the left using velcro.
4 Explain the Counting Activity: Explain that in this activity, the child will solve addition or subtraction problems using counting. They will slide the carrots to the right or left based on the problem given.
5 Demonstrate Addition: Select two numbers from one to ten (total not more than ten) and paste them on the carrots to the left of the equal sign, along with the addition symbol. For example, for 2 + 3, move the slider to show 2 carrots, then move it 3 steps to the right to add 3 more. Finally, count all the visible carrots and paste the answer (5) in the designated space using velcro.
6 Transition to Subtraction: Change the operation to subtraction, ensuring the larger number is written first. For example, in 9 − 3, instruct the child to slide the green sheet to show 9 carrots and let them count. Then guide them to slide left to hide 3 carrots, revealing that 6 remain as the answer.
7 Ongoing Assessment: Provide more subtraction (and addition) problems to further evaluate the child’s understanding. Continue to offer praise and support to guide them through any errors.
